Card issued before 2014
In 2014, the period of validity of the identity card of an adult person was increased from 10 to 15 years. Your identity card is automatically extended and remains valid for an additional 5 years if you meet the following 2 conditions:
- You were of legal age at the time of his delivery.
- The card was still valid on January 1, 2014.

If you are in this case, even if the validity date written on the card has passed, you can continue to use it for all your procedures in France for 5 years.
You can apply for early renewal of the card if you are traveling abroad to a country that accepts the identity card. You will need to provide proof of the upcoming trip.
If you have a passport, you can travel with your passport. Early renewal of the identity card will therefore not be possible.

For a minor
A minor's identity card is valid for 10 years .
If he becomes of age before his expiration date, he can continue to use it. He does not need to apply for a new card.
